History of St James Church
St. James Church is located opposite the Jail Lake in Thane city. It is a church of Protestant denomination. The church is a part of the Church of North India (CNI). Currently, St. James Church is the largest congregation in CNI. The church is led by Pastor Rev. Rajendra Bhonsle. The church is involved in various social and cultural activities that promote love and peace in the society and brotherly love among people.
The church was built in 1825 by the initiative of the wife
of Mount Stuart Elphinstone. Elphinstone was the then governor of Mumbai (then
Bombay). The church is located near a jail and was actually built at request of
the British officers posted there. The building work was commissioned to an
architect called Captain Tete. Materials from over the world were used to
complete its construction and most of the old work can still be seen.
It was inaugurated by the then Bishop of Bombay, Bishop Reginald Heber. Bishop Heber is popular for ‘Holy, Holy Holy’, a hymn that he authored. The church also has cemetery that houses various graves that date back to the 1800s including a monument to remember Stephen Babbington, the then collector of Thane who sacrificed his life trying to rescue people from a fire.
